A monumental 45-foot-tall steel mesh sculpture of a nude woman, titled “R-Evolution,” has been installed at Embarcadero Plaza near San Francisco’s Ferry Building. Created by Petaluma-based artist Marco Cochrane, the 32,000-pound artwork depicts a woman in a meditative mountain pose, facing westward toward Market Street. At night, the sculpture is illuminated from within, and an internal mechanism intermittently simulates breathing by causing the chest to rise and fall.

“R-Evolution” debuted at the Burning Man festival in 2015 and has since been displayed in various locations, including a recent year-long exhibition in Miami. The installation in San Francisco was organized by Building 180, a women-led art production agency based on Treasure Island, with sponsorship from the Sijbrandij Foundation. The project faced initial challenges, as plans to install the sculpture in Union Square were canceled due to the plaza’s delicate tiled surface being unable to support the artwork’s weight.

The sculpture’s installation was celebrated with a public unveiling event featuring DJs and lighting by Illuminate SF, a nonprofit known for orchestrating light displays around the city, including on the Bay Bridge. Shannon Riley, CEO of Building 180, emphasized the significance of the location, stating, “We wanted to be downtown, in a central artery that needed hope and inspiration.”

“R-Evolution” is expected to remain at Embarcadero Plaza for six months, with the possibility of an extension. The installation aims to enrich the public space and foster community engagement through art.
